Voting is more than a symbolic gesture; it's an action. ππ€π€ Our changemakers know this - that voting and their voices have power. When it came to the excitement of voting for the first time, former Digital & Communications Intern, Saliha Garcia, writes about her original perspective and how it transformed. π "Those comments I had once heard about voting not being important or that change never coming slowly began to fade, as I started seeing how movements, organizations, and people like you and me were able to bring on change even at times when there was little hope." - Saliha Garcia π Click this link to read the full blog. π

"We are with Houston and anyone impacted by the loss of a loved one and the loss of love to our fellow LGBTQIA+ community. Texas youth deserve to express themselves without fear of being outed by their teachers or counselors. Trans youth deserve to be alive and see themselves as adults. Trans people deserve to receive the care they need."
- Excerpt from the Deeds Not Words Official Statement condemning the violence that trans people in Texas, and across the continent, face.

Whether you're celebrating our power or defending our rights, the LGBTQIA+ community needs everyone to share the responsibility of protection because we know that any attacks on us are quick to turn towards others.

Did you know that reparations have already been implemented in the U.S.? It may seem difficult to believe, given the constant battles, but reparations have been steadily increasing over the past 10 years. In 2019, Illinois passed the first reparations law in American history. In 2020, California became the first state in the country to establish a state reparations task force. In 2022, the Detroit City Council approved a task force that would create a structure for reparations to Black Americans. This Juneteenth, we honor and celebrate those who are advocating and creating pathways to reparations and healing for Black communities.

Follow orgs like @sistersong_woc, @blackbooksexed, @hoochiesofhouston, and others to learn about how you can get involved in the reparations movement. We can join this by radically imagining Texas's state government's responsibility to Black residents who have systemically and historically been disenfranchised. When we work in community, fight together, and vote during each election, we make a positive environment for us to see and live through real change.

On June 24th, the anniversary of the overturning of Roe v Wade, reminds us that once again, we are seeing and hearing more stories of maternal mortality rates increasing and attempts to criminalize people who decide they aren't ready to give birth, no matter the reason. This year, a well-known Pregnancy Rights Advocate, Nurse-Midwife, Dr. Janell Green Smith, passed away due to complications during childbirth. Black pregnant people are far more likely to die from complications of childbirth than other races due to the lack of care from hospitals and our policymakers. This preventable issue is attributed to systemic racism, implicit biases, and care disparities.
|
In a report documenting pregnancy criminalization over the last twenty years, nearly 1,400 people had cases against them due to the rise in narratives around "protecting unborn life". Texans are well aware of how the restrictions, criminalizations, and harm impact our lives and our loved ones. With an almost total ban on abortion, our fellow Texans who may become pregnant are at the most risk.

At Deeds Not Words, we believe in galvanizing the power of young people to become agents of change, igniting cultural shifts through leader development, grassroots organizing, and the power of creative expression. We envision a future for young leaders of color where they have the autonomy to reach their full potential through freedom from violence, reproductive autonomy, economic opportunity, and equitable representation. We believe that, through building a strong foundation of empowered leaders, amplifying collective voices, and reshaping cultural norms, we aim to dismantle oppressive systems and cultivate a society where equity and justice thrive.
Our changemakers are eager to collaborate with a diverse range of partners across Texas, and nationally β fellow non-profits, foundations, businesses, and moreβ to tackle critical issues facing young people. Together we can cultivate a society where equity and justice thrive. If this sounds like you or an ally, weβd love to connect! To explore partnership opportunities or learn more, please contact us at hello@deedstx.org.
