About our internship Program

Our internship program offers great opportunities for dedicated individuals interested in learning more about nonprofit work and enhancing their skills in community organizing, public policy, artistic expression, and digital communication. At Deeds Not Words, interns are able to learn and hone their talents in order to understand what it takes to be successful in activism today.

We have worked with over 15 learners, consisting of graphic design interns, digital interns, and policy interns. The program helps the interns in a plethora of skills like management, communications, and creativity. We strive to keep in touch with past interns to follow their leadership development path and the next stages in their careers.

Digital Intern

As a Deeds Digital Intern, you will:

  • Create content and help maintain social media channels to highlight our work and educate our audience about ways they can participate to drive change (particularly via TikTok and Instagram)

  • Video editing for IG and TikTok reels

  • Assist with our Deeds Digest monthly newsletter by supporting content curation & outreach for features

  • Set up & support for our texting campaigns

  • Support with rapid response messaging and graphics

Qualifications:

  • Have a passion for creating meaningful community change.

  • Be excited about engaging others.

  • Have the ability to adjust the voice and tone to match our brand’s personality: youthful, humorous, informative, inspiring.

  • Have knowledge and experience with social media management for a project, club, organization, company, etc.

  • BONUS: Have experience with social media metrics/analytics and CRM email data.

Your commitment to us: 12 hours per week
Our commitment to you:  $1000 monthly stipend

POLICY Intern

As a Deeds Policy Intern, you will:

  • Conduct legislative research on policy priorities 

  • Assist in coordinating events, special initiatives, and campaigns 

  • Organize advocacy trainings 

  • Craft messaging around policy and the TX Lege for digital platforms

  • Support the digital department in content creation

  • Watch and live-tweet policy hearings 

  • Write texting scripts for our special campaigns and initiatives 

  • Draft  policy memos and policy presentations

  • Track local policy and engage our youth advocates

  • Set up meetings with elected officials to discuss our Free Agenda 

  • Work with the Advocacy, Cultural, and Leadership Development departments to create a holistic strategy that centers our young advocates when educating and advocating around the TX Legislature.

Qualifications:

  • Have a passion for creating meaningful community change. 

  • Be excited about engaging others. 

  • Have the ability to adjust the voice and tone to match our brand’s personality: youthful, humorous, informative, inspiring.

  • Have an understanding of progressive issues and how to communicate them

  • Have prior experience working the Texas legislative session is a bonus, but not required

  • ​​You thrive in an environment where one week could bring about new projects every day, and the next week could see you dedicated to one specific project 24/7. You are able to shift priorities while keeping multiple project deadlines in mind.

Our commitment to you:  $1,000 monthly stipend

Graphic Design Intern

As a Deeds Graphic Design Intern, you will:

  • Design and illustrate content for Instagram

  • Create graphics for rapid response

  • Design branding for special campaigns as well as GOTV

  • Produce illustrations and info-graphics for our zine and other materials

  • Support and draft content for art and advocacy trainings

  • Create digital and print collateral in collaboration with our college campus chapters

  • Create artwork for swag

Qualifications:

  • Have a passion for creating meaningful community change

  • Have a basic understanding of progressive issues

  • Be excited about engaging others

  • Must be detail-oriented

  • Must submit a digital portfolio

  • Ability to meet deadlines

  • A firm knowledge of typography and layout

  • Able to work within an established brand identity system

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suites (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) is required

  • Must have your own laptop with the above programs

Not required, but a plus:

  • Working knowledge of print production

  • Working knowledge of video production
